Conflict between staff and families can develop as a result of unmet expectations. Families expect a lot from your program. By anticipating potential issues and communicating proactively, you can often eliminate conflict. Here are some common sources of conflict when it comes to parental expectations: I expect to see the same staff member at pick up as I do at drop off. I expect that my child’s clothes will be clean when I pick them up. I expect my child to stay awake during nap time so they will sleep better at night. I expect you to keep my child from getting bitten. I expect my child’s homework to be complete at pick up. I expect my child to stay inside when it’s cold outside. Take some time and reflect on common concerns that families have expressed at your program. One way to address concerns is to create a Frequently Asked Questions section in your family handbook where you can provide rationale behind each answer. In the space below, make a list of concerns and note how they should be addressed during orientation and in your family handbook.
