Early care and education (ECE) professionals play a critical role in creating high-quality learning environments for young children. Yet, turnover within the ECE workforce remains a significant challenge. Frequent staff changes can disrupt children’s learning and development, while also impacting program operations—leading to scheduling difficulties, increased workload and stress for remaining staff, and impacting the overall financial health of the program. However, program leaders can help reduce turnover and foster workforce retention by implementing practices that support ECE professionals’ well-being and professional growth. In this session, we share some of the latest research on factors that impact teacher turnover and share strategies that support retention such as fostering respectful and caring work environments. We also discuss how to implement these strategies within programs and highlight tools and resources to aid implementation, ultimately leading to higher quality programs and more stable learning environments for children.
