Fostering Learning in the Outdoor Environment

Bringing planned and purposeful experiences into the outdoor environment can enhance learning, improve physical and mental health, and build positive social skills and emotional wellbeing. In this webinar, we unpacked the benefits of outdoor play and learning for both children and adults. We addressed the common barriers and challenges that often come with extending the curriculum into the outdoors by reflecting on child and youth program professionals’ beliefs about learning and ways to connect learning in and about nature to developmental domains. Additionally, we explored ways to integrate lessons and activities from common curriculums like ELM or Creative Curriculum into the outdoor learning environment and how resources in the VLS can support professionals in facilitating outdoor learning experiences.
